What is Chainlink VRF? Your Guide to Provable Fairness

A closer look at how RaffleKing brings transparency and trust to high-stakes raffles.

Provably fair is a phrase that’s thrown around a lot in Web3, especially with projects or games that deal with chance. While it’s a buzzy phrase that sounds good on paper, it’s often used without much explanation. In simplest terms, provable fairness means the outcome of a game, draw, or event can be publicly verified by anyone, not just the people running it. It’s ultimately what gives every participant the assurance that the system worked the way it said it would, and it’s what RaffleKing is built on.

Provable fairness is particularly important when dealing with draws or games that have real assets and prizes on the line, like a high-stakes raffle. If the result decides who wins 1 BTC, a blue-chip NFT, or anything of real value, the draw needs to be watertight and free of interference.

When trust breaks down, so does the game.

What is Chainlink VRF and how does it work?

At the heart of every provably fair draw on RaffleKing is a system called Chainlink VRF (Verifiable Random Function) – a mathematical concept first introduced back in 1999 by renowned computer scientists Silvio Micali (founder of Algorand), Michael Rabin and Salil Vadhan. It’s the tool we use to generate a random number when a raffle ends, and to prove beyond doubt that the result wasn’t manipulated.

Here’s how it works.

When a raffle closes – either because all the tickets are sold or the time runs out – a request is sent to the Chainlink VRF smart contract. That request contains a few key inputs: a unique seed value tied to the raffle, the address of the smart contract that made the request, and a few parameters to define how the randomness will be used.

Once the request is in, Chainlink VRF uses off-chain computation (via a secure network of independent oracle nodes) to generate a random number based on that input seed. But it doesn’t just send back the number – it also sends a cryptographic proof that the number was generated correctly, using a private key held by the oracle and the input seed as part of the formula.

This proof is then verified by the Chainlink VRF smart contract on-chain. If the proof is valid, the number is accepted and final. If anything looks off, even slightly, it’s rejected.

This process makes it mathematically impossible to tamper with the result, producing randomness that is both verifiable and binding.

Once the number is locked, it’s matched against the entries in that raffle. The winning entry is chosen based on the result, and if the prize is an EVM digital asset, the payout is distributed automatically by the smart contract.

So, when we say our draws are provably fair, we don’t mean you just have to take our word for it. You can see the random seed, and if you want, you can run the math yourself.

From Random Number to Winner: What Happens Next

Once Chainlink VRF returns a verified random number, that number becomes the anchor for the result. From that single number, the winning ticket is selected.

Here’s how it works on RaffleKing.

Each raffle has a clearly defined pool of valid entries: real tickets, issued as ERC-20 tokens, all linked to wallet addresses. When the random number comes in, it’s run through a simple on-chain algorithm that maps it to one of those ticket IDs. There’s no manual selection, no draw animation, and no central team picking a winner behind the scenes.

The winning ticket is then matched with the corresponding wallet, and if it’s a digital EVM prize, the smart contract issues the payout directly.

This final link is just as important as the randomness itself, because it doesn’t matter how fair your random number is if the selection process that follows isn’t locked down. At RaffleKing, both parts are on-chain – the random generation and the result – so everything is traceable, checkable, and above all, consistent.

It also means there’s no room for post-draw edits, swap-outs, or substitutions. The prize goes where it’s meant to go, every time.

How do I enter a raffle on RaffleKing?

To enter, you’ll need to create an account, either by connecting a wallet or signing up with an email. Once registered, you can fund your balance using BTC, ETH, USDT or USDC, then buy a ticket bundle directly on the dashboard. Once you’ve found a raffle you wish to enter, you’ll need to answer a simple trivia question – it only takes a few clicks.
